The town of San Angelo first developed next to Fort Concho, one of the U.S. Army’s western line of defensive forts built to support settlers. The town developed into a center for sheep and goat production, but the area’s resources and residents’ personal drive have pushed forward a variety of industries beyond the city’s more humble beginnings. Today, San Angelo is the trade and services hub of a 13-county area, supported by not only agriculture, but also by manufacturing; public, private and higher education; a wide variety of business, health and retirement services; the military; and tourism.
